Fashion Companies and the new European Legislation for a Circular Economy

Results from the SDA Bocconi Monitor for Circular Fashion

The Monitor for Circular Fashion (M4CF), part of the Sustainability Lab of SDA Bocconi School of Management, presented its 2024/2025 Report during the annual event dedicated to circularity in the fashion industry. The event, held at the SDA Bocconi campus in Milan, brought together industry experts, partner companies of the Monitor, policymakers, representatives from the European Commission, EURATEX, UNECE, and numerous key players in the fashion supply chain, from upstream to downstream, including Deda Stealth

The report offers an in-depth analysis of the progress of the Monitor's companies in terms of EcodesignBiodiversitySocial Impact, and Governance, in light of the latest European regulatory developments.

The M4CF aims to be an accelerator for the circular transition, providing companies with concrete tools to face new regulatory and market challenges through the sharing of best practices and the analysis of sustainability strategies

Ecodesign: a Lever for Sustainability

The implementation of ecodesign was the focus of a session that explored the costs and benefits of this approach. The report's data provides an overview of companies' ecodesign maturity level, highlighting the need for more information to conduct a cost-benefit analysis and continue the path towards circularity.

During the panel, experts such as Mauro Scalia (Euratex), Caterina Tonda (Kering Material Innovation Lab), and Liuba Napoli (Eurojersey) addressed the topic of product ecodesign to promote circularity and reduce environmental impact throughout the Fashion supply chain.

Technologies for Circularity: Innovation and Challenges

Another central theme of the event was the role of technology in facilitating the transition to a circular model. According to forecasts from M4CF service providers, the most relevant technologies for circularity in the next 3 years will be those for recycling, traceability, and Digital Product Passports (DPP). There is also an expected increase in the adoption of artificial intelligence to support the circular transition, followed by online platforms for circularity and traceability. Industry experts discussed how the adoption of new solutions can improve traceability, production efficiency, and resource management in the fashion sector.

Cecilia Nilsson Bottka from the European Commission also previewed the platform for the sustainable transition of the fashion sector (Transition Pathways Stakeholders’ Support Platform: Implementation for the Textiles Ecosystem)Maria Teresa Pisani (UNECE) introduced the Circular Fashion Manifesto while several companies presented the M4CF's commitment to more circular production models during the entire event.

The Roadmap for Circularity

The M4CF 2024/2025 report presents a roadmap to accelerate the circularity performance of the sector, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach between institutions, companies, and innovators. The Lab plans to meet with policymakers in Brussels in June 2025 to present the first results of working groups on eco-design, technologies, and social impact.

The activity carried by the M4CF and all the involved stakeholders continue to position this initiative as a point of reference for the fashion industry, supporting brands and institutions in addressing the sustainability challenge with an approach based on data, innovation, and collaboration
